Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada Facebook Page

I subscribe to a news feed of items through a Google alert related to the term “aboriginal.”

Recently, the Facebook page for Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada shows up almost every day. https://www.facebook.com/AANDCanada?fref=nf

Strangely, there is little mention of Aboriginal education given the Department’s mandate and no mention of postsecondary education.

I am intrigued by the narrow range of topics that are posted and I can’t help but wonder if the management of this page is contracted out, similar to the Veteran’s Affairs twitter feed.

In an non-statistical survey of the topics on the page, which launched in 2013, the most common themes at the moment appear to be:

  • legislation or policy under development that relates to Aboriginal people in Canada
  • emergency preparedness and fire safety
  • Aboriginal languages
  • Truth and Reconciliation Commission
  • treaty agreements
  • research
  • resource development
